The route

The stops on the guided walk through central Vicenza

The order of the stops may change depending on the day's opening times and your interests. The common thread stays the same: reading the city through the eyes of Palladio and his patrons.

  1. Teatro Olimpico: a guided tour inside

Andrea Palladio's last work, designed in 1580 for the Accademia Olimpica and completed after his death by Vincenzo Scamozzi. It opened on 3 March 1585 with Sophocles' Oedipus Rex. Inside you will see the tiered seating inspired by Roman theatres, the proscenium crowded with statues and Scamozzi's wooden perspective scenery, the seven streets of Thebes that seem to run on for ever. It is one of the oldest indoor theatres in the world still in use.

  2. Santa Corona, the Dominican church

A Gothic church built from 1260 onwards to house a thorn from Christ's crown, a gift from King Louis IX of France. Here you will find Giovanni Bellini's Baptism of Christ, one of the masterpieces of the Venetian Renaissance, and the Cappella Valmarana, attributed to Palladio. The same complex is home to the Museo Naturalistico Archeologico (Natural History and Archaeology Museum).

  3. Corso Palladio and its palazzi

The ancient decumanus of Roman Vicetia is today the city's main street. As we walk, we will point out how Vicenza's noble families turned their Gothic houses into classical façades, and how within a few decades Palladio's style became the language of the city.

  4. Contrà Porti, the street of noble families

In just a few metres of Contrà Porti street, Venetian Gothic and the Renaissance stand side by side: here are Palazzo Porto, designed by Palladio for Iseppo da Porto, and Palazzo Barbaran da Porto, now home to the Palladio Museum. It is the ideal place to compare two ways of building and see what changes with Palladio.

  5. Basilica Palladiana and Piazza dei Signori

The civic heart of Vicenza. The stone loggias of the Basilica Palladiana, designed in a project approved in 1549 and completed in 1614, wrap around the medieval palazzo della Ragione beneath its great roof shaped like an upturned ship's hull. Opposite stand the Loggia del Capitaniato (Palladio, 1571) and the Torre Bissara, which towers over the square.

Why Vicenza is Palladio's city

Andrea di Pietro della Gondola, born in Padua in 1508, came to Vicenza as a stonemason and became Palladio thanks to the humanist Gian Giorgio Trissino. He worked in the city for more than thirty years: palazzi, loggias, churches and his last theatre. That is why Vicenza, together with the villas of the Veneto, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994.

During the tour we will not just give you dates and names: we will help you recognise the architectural orders, the proportions and the dialogue with Roman antiquity, so that you can read every façade you come across after the tour on your own.

A city to read on foot

Corso Palladio is one continuous story: Gothic palazzi with Venetian mullioned windows, Renaissance façades, Baroque and Neoclassical additions. Moving on foot at an easy pace, you catch the details that a hurried visit misses, from carved doorways to the inner courtyards glimpsed through half-open doors.

The historic centre is compact and almost entirely pedestrianised: in three hours you see a great deal without tiring.

Piazza dei Signori, Vicenza's drawing room

The square was the centre of civic power under the rule of the Venetian Republic, as the columns bearing the Lion of St Mark and the Redeemer remind us. Here the dialogue between the Basilica and the Loggia del Capitaniato shows two phases of Palladio's career: the classical restraint of his early years and the sculptural richness of his late works.
